Brain Damage in Fetuses linked to Toothpaste Brand Used by Pregnant Mothers

A chemical present in several brands of soap & toothpaste are being associated with fetal brain damage.

Researchers are fearful that expectant mothers with exposure to elevated amounts of the chemical known as triclosan might place their infants at greater risk.

Startling novel discoveries indicate that triclosan might disturb blood circulation to the uterine region causing brain damage in the fetus by malnourishment due to oxygen shortage it urgently requires for proper development.

Lately Univ. of Florida scientists who were part of the trial urged for critical examinations into the risks posed to fetuses.

Prof. M. James who was part of the study team stated that they were aware of the existence of such an issue. However, the extent to which this issue impacts us was not known.

Triclosan is a potent antiseptic which was created almost five decades back and presently is widely employed in several antibacterial products like handwash, wash-up liquids, soap and even in toothpaste, deodorant brands, several antibacterial slicing board & also several toy brands.

The uses of triclosan has been ridden with worries about how safe its use is & in the initial part of 2010 the United States FDA declared that it was conducting an key reassessment on how safe the chemical truly was.

During the recent trial, testing done on sheep found that triclosan did have an interfering action on an ezyme which permitted estrogen hormone in circulating in the uterus. Estrogen assists in keeping the major artery opened for conveying oxygenated blood to the unborn child. When there is paucity of it, the major artery would constrict & oxygen supply gets sapped thus triggering fetal brain damage.

In the United Kingdom, the usage of Triclosan comes under the European Uniion Cosmetics Directive. It states that the chemical is risk-free for using, though solely in miniscule dosages. The max amount permitted in antibacterial products among others is 0.3%.

Pharmaceutical heavy-weight GSK has already done phasing-out of this chemical’s usage in products like Corsodyl oral wash, toothpastes like Sensodynes, Aquafresh. Triclosan could yet be present in toothpaste like Colgate Total.

ChemTrust is a group lobbying for conscientious usage of synthetic chemical substances and its chief E. Salter Green has urged all expectant mothers to steer clear of triclosan. She firmly advocates that all women during pregnancy totally evade any product having triclosan presence in its constituents. She believes that the use of antibacterial products like bactericidal soaps is not needed when one scrupulously washes hands at regular intervals.

However, spokesperson from the CTPA states that the trial outcomes were done on sheep which doesn’t establish the analogous outcomes noted in human-beings. She stated that notable trials on safety quotient of the chemical on humans & the environment has been done in the past and till date they have been found to be free of risk. She adds that the CTPA’s main concern has always been the safety of consumers and has worked with regulatory authority for ensuring every novel study is considered.

Last year, the SCCS, an autonomous body of specialists that report to the European Union Commission, corroborated the safety quotient of this chemical as a cosmetic constituent, as prevalently employed, usage limited to 0.3 percent.
