Medication During Pregnancy – Being Cautious About Pain Killers

How many of you deem pain killers as medications? A new-fangled trial noted that three from ten females stated that they had resorted to some type of medication during pregnancy. These women when distinctively questioned about mentioning pain killers – this number increased two-folds to six women among ten.

The analogous trial indicated that pain killers must actually be thought of in the analogous manner as other medicines & pregnant women must take a guarded stance regarding intake of any medication during pregnancy.

In a set of Danish females, the use of pain killer medication during pregnancy was found to be associated with an augmented possibility of giving birth to a male child having testicles that had not descended or cryptochidism.

When developments of male foetuses occur, formation of testicles within their abdominal region occurs. It is only briefly prior to delivery that the testicles start descending into the scrotal area. But, for a number of male children, a single or duo testicles fails in descending and this is among the most prevalent birth anomalies afflicting about three per cent of newly born male babies.

From the mothers whose male babies had a non-descended testicle, sixty-four percent of them cited taking pain killers during gestational period. From the females delivering healthy male babies, fifty-six percent of them reported taking pain killers. Independently, such discrepancy is not that strong for leading to any conclusion. But, the risk was more among females taking more than a single kind of pain-allaying medicine, ones taking pain killer medicines for more than a fortnight or taking them in the middle trimester of gestation.

The scientists on looking into these medicines noted that aspirin & ibuprofen were found to be associated with an augment in risk. In case of acetaminophen, a rise in risk was noted; however arithmetical testing found that it was miniscule enough to have occurred accidentally.

Even though the trial indicates that there is reason to be concerned yet its outcome are nebulous. The scientists depended on females remembering what type of medicines they took during pregnancy which is not often that simple hence making the trial somewhat lesser dependable. Moreover it is not yet known whether the pain killer medications were the reason for birth anomalies. In case the females were mostly taking the pain-allayers when sick, it can be the sickness which had an effect on their fetal growth rather than the pain killer medicine/s.

The reality is that females taking pain killer medicines for protracted periods of times had a greater risk, but, indicates that it is possibly more prudent to be wary regarding intake of any medication during pregnancy – even in case they are OTC pain killer varieties.

In case a pregnant woman has opted for some pain killer, she must avoid getting panicky. Although the trial did unearth a rise in risk, most females taking the pain-allaying drugs delivered infants in good health.

Non-descended testicles are not generally a grave issue and mostly they descend on their own within the initial couples of months after birth in male babies. In case it doesn’t then there is always the option of going in for operative rectification of this condition. But, a number of boys having non-descended testicles have been observed to suffer from poor sperm quality later on in their lives thus hampering fertility. Non-descended testicles even might augment the likelihood of developing cancer of the testis, even though the risk is slight.

Though as a rule of thumb, it is safest to steer clear of any medicines when pregnant, it is no always attainable. Hence, one must always be cross-checking with one’s doctor to ensure that one takes the safest medicine in the most risk-free manner.
